■ Can I take plants home?
Whether you can bring plants into your country depends on your country's rules. We cannot guarantee entry, so please check before you buy.
・Most countries do not allow soil. Plants usually need to be bare-root (all soil removed).
・Many countries require a phytosanitary certificate from Japan's Plant Protection Station (free of charge). You can get one at the export quarantine counters at Narita, Haneda and other airports. Please contact them in advance to book, and allow 30–60 minutes on the day.
・Some countries require an import permit issued before you travel (e.g. Canada, Hong Kong, Singapore). The USA allows up to 12 bare-root plants with a phytosanitary certificate without a permit, but CITES-listed plants are excluded. Australia and mainland China effectively do not allow travelers to bring in live plants.
・Pachypodium, succulent Euphorbia, cacti, Agave victoriae-reginae, Operculicarya pachypus and Senna meridionalis are listed under CITES (the Washington Convention). Even nursery-grown potted plants need a CITES export permit from Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), which takes about 1 week to 1 month. This is not realistic during a short trip.
・Pots and gardening tools (new, with no soil) are easy to take home. For grow lights and other electrical items, please check the voltage and plug type for your country.
・Our staff can tell you the scientific name of each plant.
